Review: The Best and Worst of Classical 5

The “Classical 5” concert was held on Friday 22nd January, 2010. The event took place at Ohio Theatre, where the Columbus Symphony gave an enchanting performance, which enthralled the large crowd gathered there. The conductor for the night was Andreas Dalif.

The best piece by far was the Fandangos, presented by Robert Sierra. It left the audience spellbound, as it almost came out to be as a surreal and out of this world experience for them. Despite the beautifully blended items that were presented, the outcome of the event was a combination of very loud and very soft music.

This was not a pleasant mix at a musical show.Andre Watts performed a piece on Beethoven’s Piano Concerto 5, the “Emperor”, which was good, except that we had expected much better from a musician of his caliber and a good experience. The music was interrupted and sounded somewhat shaky throughout.

An appearance was made by the Brahms’ second symphony, which has an ironic connection with Columbus Symphony’s history. The >orchestra is known to have given a performance on the same symphony back in 2001, when they performed at Carnegie Hall. Though the meaning of the symphony is different to the audience, yesterday’s performance surely has instilled it as a fond memory of the past.
